Chapter 16

C hloe woke at the base of the Oak, disoriented but otherwise feeling surprisingly good. There was no lingering headache like she’d had after that powder had been blown in her face, and no trace of fatigue. Had she somehow broken the spell keeping Salus asleep? She hadn’t intended to do more than figure out the magic, but she was still learning. Was it possible she’d reversed the sleep magic by accident?

She pushed herself to a sitting position and brushed leaves and dirt off her face but didn’t bother trying to dig out all the twigs that had tangled in her hair. It wouldn’t help and would take entirely too long to do, even half-assed. Her hair was just too unruly. She looked around but didn’t see Mavros. For an instant she wondered why he would have left her, but then she saw someone else.

The second she spotted the familiar man she knew she was dreaming. After all, the only other time she’d seen him had been when she was asleep, right before she was accused of a second murder. Fortunately, the charges didn’t stick, as Kyra had been outed as the one who had done the actual killing, even if she had been under the control of another at the time.

He was a couple inches past six feet, with short blonde hair and skin tanned a little darker than her own. She could never quite help but think he looked like the stereotypical surfer, if a little too perfect to seem real. He even had a build she’d attribute to a surfer or swimmer.

This time he was dressed in a tee-shirt and a pair of jeans that were a bit faded at the cuffs. Despite that, he gave off an aura of strength, dignity, and power she couldn’t ignore.

Frowning, she got to her feet. “Why do I keep dreaming about you?” she demanded. “Are you even real or is this some weird subconscious thing? Last time you just told me not to trust anyone. Does that mean my subconscious doesn’t trust anyone?”

Maybe she could ignore the strength, dignity, and power a little.

The man chuckled and nodded, looking entirely at ease. “I’m very real. You still have quite a bit to learn about your world and the possibilities now open to you. Communication and travel between dreams is a fairly easy task.” The humor faded some before he continued. “And it would still be wise not to trust anyone.”

Putting her hands on her hips, Chloe just glared at him. “Uh huh. But I’m guessing you’re still not going to tell me who you are? Or what your interest is in me?”

The smile in his voice disappeared completely. “I can’t, Chloe. Believe me, I wish I could. I want to, I truly do, but it would be too dangerous. And, once again, you have more important things to worry about than who I am.”

His voice was sincere but she wasn’t going to trust so easily. She might not fully take his advice as she trusted a handful of people, but he hadn’t earned that right.
